In the afternoon, another zodiac cruise, this time around Detaille Island, the site of Base "W" and an Adelie penguin colony. Conditions prevented landing at the colony, although we did make a quick stop nearby.
The Gullet is a narrow passage between Adelaide Island and Arrowsmith Peninsula on the mainland. Often blocked by ice, it was the first time most (all?) of the staff had made the passage, and most of them were out on deck to observe.
After searching for a suitable landing spot, we set foot on the Antarctic mainland at Centurion Glacier. This was the southernmost point of the expedition, 68°12' South.
The various Antarctic research stations are still closed to public visits due to Covid. Instead, we sailed around Base San Martin and waved to the staff.
